Welcoming Announcements   (Pastor)

Opening Sentences         (Pastor)

The Presence of the Lord is Here.

The Presence of the Lord is Here.

You can feel it in the atmosphere.

The Presence of the Lord is Here.

Opening Hymn - #611 Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee

Prayer of Adoration – Psalm 122 (David)

I was glad when they said to me, let us go to the House of the Lord.  Our feet are standing within your gates, O Jerusalem.  Jerusalem - built as a city that is bound firmly together.  To it the tribes go up, the tribes of the Lord.

As was decreed for Israel, to give thanks to the name of the Lord, for there the thrones for judgement were set up.  The thrones of the House of David.

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem; "May they prosper who love you.  Peace should be within your walls and security within your towers."  For the sake of my relatives and friends I will say, "Peace be within you."  For the sake of the House of the Lord our God, I will seek your good.

(Erik) (Before the reading)                                                                                           A Reading from Paul’s Second Letter to the Corinthians:

16 but when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. 17 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 18 And all of us, with unveiled faces, seeing the glory of the Lord as though reflected in a mirror, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another; for this comes from the Lord, the Spirit.

(After the reading)   The Word of the Lord.

(All respond)   Thanks be to God.

(Before the reading)   (Rev. Paula)

A reading from Paul’s Second letter toPeter 1: 1-11

His divine power has given us everything needed for life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Thus.0.0 he has given us, through these things, his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may escape from the corruption that is in the world because of lust, and may become participants of the divine nature. For this very reason, you must make every effort to support your faith with goodness, and goodness with knowledge, and knowledge with self control, and self control with endurance, and endurance with godliness, and godliness with mutual affection, and mutual affection with love. Both these things are yours and are increasing among you, they keep you from being ineffective and unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ for anyone who lacks these things is near sighted and blind, and is forgetful of the cleansing of past sins. Therefore, brothers and sisters, be all the more eager to conform your call and election for if you do this, you will never stumble. For in this way, entry into the eternal Kingdom of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ will be richly provided for you.

After the reading)   The Word of the Lord.

(All respond)   Thanks be to God.

Sermon:   On Freedom (Rev. Dr. Paula Sanders)

Music in Response to the Word                                                                              Oh Happy Day – sung by Ray Charles and the Voices of Jubilation

Affirmation of Faith –

Lines from The Brief Statement of Faith

(Read together)

In life and in death we belong to God.
Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,
the love of God,
and the communion of the Holy Spirit,
we trust in the one triune God, the Holy One of Israel,
whom alone we worship and serve.

In a broken and fearful world
the Spirit gives us courage
to pray without ceasing,
to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior,
to unmask idolatries in Church and culture,
to hear the voices of peoples long silenced,
and to work with others for justice, freedom, and peace.
In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit,
we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks
and to live holy and joyful lives,
even as we watch for God’s new heaven and new earth,
praying, “Come, Lord Jesus!”

With believers in every time and place,
we rejoice that nothing in life or in death
can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. Amen.*
